I have been following the efforts to increase property taxes on the Irving refinery in Saint John. I don’t know enough about the specifics to comment on comparisons or analyses that have been done. I know in general jurisdictions in Canada - not just Saint John in general tend to tax industry less than in U.S. jurisdictions.
Like any relationship - personal or business - the best ones are had when both parties treat one another as equals and raise one another up.
In this instance there has been a history of one party taking advantage of the other. From a decades long company friendly water deal, a sweetheart tax break on an LNG plant to appealing tax assesments that provincial officials seem to always approve.
Much like the developed world, it just now just starting to pay a carbon tax to offset its contribution to carbon pollution, the Irving Oil refinery is that developed entity within the region of Saint John, NB.
Tax fairness needs to be achieved at some point, if not now, when?
