We have convinced ourselves that cathedral building is harder work and doesn’t come with benefits - yet imagine the sense of standing back and admiring what you helped to build !
This is true. My hunch is that this is, if only in part, is because we don't enter into apprenticeship anymore - formal, or by choice. Interestingly, my European friends, generally speaking, still see "public" life as an admirable path. That there is something to be done there. That you can still attract top tier talent to these meaningful roles.
